Developer wants in on brownfield renewal

A Brownfield redeveloper wants to join the city in an effort to redevelop the derelict Greenwich-Mohawk industrial area.

In interviews Tuesday with The Expositor and Ward 5 councillors Marguerite Ceschi-Smith and John Starkey, Steve Charest of King and Benton Development Corp. detailed his company's plan to redevelop the 52-acre area that contains three sprawling Brownfield properties in Eagle Place.

"You don't have to look very far to see that Brownfield redevelopment isn't done by municipalities alone," Charest told The Expositor.

Local farmer-led co-operative 'upbeat' about ethanol loans

Leaders of a local fanner-led cooperative believe an announcement Friday of special loans to seven ethanol-processing ventures bodes well for the future of their proposed $86-million plant on the outskirts of Brantford.
According to its business plan, IGPC’s plant would use 11.8 million bushels of corn a year to produce 125 million liters of ethanol. The process would also yield as byproducts 96,000 tones a year of distillers grain for livestock feed and 60,000 tones of carbon dioxide.

Economic benefits to the area would include 150 construction jobs, 32 to 35 high-paying permanent jobs, annual direct revenue of $75 million and direct and indirect revenue of $175 million.

Miracle On Morrell St.

Homedale has something to smile about these days. The former Harding Carpets factory is being transformed into nearly a brand new building. In just two months, owner King and Benton Development Corp. has worked miracles with cleanup and repairs, making the building safe, addressing environmental concerns and getting things ready to return to business as a warehouse.
City officials were amazed by the progress they saw during a tour Friday led by company president Steve Charest. The blocklong facility on Morrell Street is undergoing a $3.25 million renaissance.
